About the Original
The lion carved out of the rock symbolizes the bravery and strength of the massacred Swiss guards during the French Revolution. The impaled and dying lion is carved into a sandstone cliff, reflected in the pool below and the girl who has become his Ophelia. Mark Twain described this lion sculpture as “the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world”.
